Former ISRO Chairman U R Rao Passes Away, Prime Minister Expresses Grief

Former ISRO Chairman and celebrated scientist, Professor U R Rao (85) passed away at his Bengaluru residence on Monday.

The Public Relations Director of Indian Space Research Organisation, Deviprasad Karnik confirmed his death saying, “Rao passed away at his residence in the city's eastern suburb at around 3 a.m., after prolonged illness and age-related health issues.”

Earlier this year Rao was admitted in a hospital with heart ailments.

The Prime Minister also expressed his grief on the micro-blogging website Twitter, saying, "Saddened by demise of renowned scientist, Professor UR Rao. His remarkable contribution to India's space programme will never be forgotten."

According to ISRO, He had served as the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Laboratory at Ahmedabad and also as the Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Science and Technology (IIST) of Thiruvananthapuram.

Professor Rao had served the ISRO as the Chairman for 10 years from 1984 to 1994. Last year, he was inducted into the International Aeronautical Federation (IAF) Hall of Fame during the closing ceremony of IAF Congress 2016 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
