As the MLAs in Tamil Nadu hike their salaries almost two fold, there was an outcry among the state farmers, who are protesting in the capital for their loan waiver as they beat themselves with chappals (flip-flops).

Farmer leader P. Ayyakannu said, “Farmers do not have food to eat or money to survive due to prolonged drought in our state. Instead of taking steps to provide them relief, our MLAs chose to increase their own salaries. We have been left speechless by their shameless action. We condemn it in very strong words.”

About 80 farmers shouted slogans against the state lawmakers, calling the salary move "shameless" and describing their own condition as "worse than beggars".

Nearly 100 farmers from the agrarian crisis-hit state, who had suspended their 41-day long protest following government assurance in April, turned up again at the Jantar Mantar on Sunday to press for their demands.

The outcry was a result of Tamil Nadu legislators approving a 100 percent hike in their salaries that took their salaries from Rs 55,000 to Rs 1.05 lakh per month. Apart from salary increase the legislators also approved a Rs 8,000 hike in pension taking it up to Rs 20,000 and an increase in MLA Development Fund from Rs 2 crore to Rs 2.5 crore.

The Tamil Nadu farmers are on an indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar for a complete loan waiver. Along with the loan waiver, the farmers are demanding Rs 40,000-crore drought relief package, compensation for agriculture produce, crop insurance to individual farmers, and linking of rivers to address the water crisis in Tamil Nadu.
