Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's husband Parakala Prabhakar on Tuesday quit from his post of media adviser for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Prabhakar is also a political commentator in the state and is considered to be an intellectual with an inclination towards right-wing politics.

In a 2-page resignation letter to Naidu, Prabhakar blamed YSR Congress Party President and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly YS Jaganmohan Reddy for his decision. The Leader of Opposition had been alleging that the TDP, despite withdrawing from the NDA alliance, still kept contacts with the BJP through Prabhakar, whose wife is a Union Minister.

“Some opposition leaders are trying to create doubts among the people on your Dharma Poratam (fight for justice) with the BJP and the Centre. They are trying to question my presence in the government and your sincerity,” Prabhakar said, conveying to Naidu that the comments had pained him.

“It is unfortunate that God had not blessed such people with the wisdom that the political ideologies and commitments of matured people would not be influenced by their personal and family relations”, Prabhakar commented.

“I wish that my continuation in the government should not cast its shadow either on your fight for justice for the state or your commitment to the cause. Yours and government’s prestige should not suffer even a small loss because of me,” he said.

Andhra Pradesh's ruling TDP withdrew from the BJP-led NDA government in March this year after the centre did not grant the state Special Category Status as had been promised during the time of the state's bifurcation and no special package was granted in the Union Budget either.
