A day after communal tension between locals and transport staff in Them Mawlong area of Shillong, curfew was imposed and internet services were suspended in 14 localities of the state on Friday.

A verbal duo between a woman, who was saved by a whisker when a bus passed by her and the bus conductor allegedly led to a series of clashes in Shillong. In order to calm the situation down, curfew was imposed.

A woman was on her way back in the city's Them Mawlong area. Her quick thinking saved her from a bus coming from behind. The argument between the lady and bus conductor drew the attention of the passersby and locals ending beating up the conductor.

While things calmed down earlier but the situation turned dramatically when the co-workers turned up to avenge the beating of their co-worker. One thing led to another and soon there was a full-blown clash between the mob armed with rod, daggers and other sharp weapons. The mob included the transport staff and residents and all this kept growing due to social media.

As the situation turned worse, more forces requisitioned and anti-riot vehicles and other sources to stop them got down to the area. Fearing more clashes, Section 144 was imposed in the East Khasi Hills of Shillong.

“It all started after a bus conductor was assaulted by locals allegedly misbehaved with a woman”. said a police officer. 3 people were arrested for violence. The situation is under control a policeman added.
