The 'saffron wave' of the BJP swept through Himachal Pradesh as well, winning the party the state which had been under the rule of the Congress party, causing the grand old party to rethink the situation in Himachal Pradesh.

The Congress has suspended 37 of its leaders in Himachal Pradesh, including 2 former ministers, 2 former MLAs and an ex-president of the NSUI for a total of 6 years for their 'anti-party' activities during the last assembly elections. The primary membership of the suspended leaders has also been cancelled.

As the Congress analysed its defeat in Himachal Pradesh, many felt that the party could have won the assembly polls if infighting and factionalism had not afflicted it. The presence of 'rebels' on many seats was said to be responsible for the defeat in the party candidates, in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections where the BJP won 44 seats and Congress won only 21.
