Citizenship Bill Protests: Sedition Case Filed Against Akhil Gogoi,Hiren Gohain & Manjit Mahanta

Sedition cases were registered on Thursday against RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, Assamese litterateur Hiren Gohain and a senior journalist for their comments on the citizenship bill, a police official confirmed.

Guwahati commissioner of police Deepak Kumar confirmed, “We have registered a case under sections 120 (B), 121, 123, 124 (A) at the Latasil Police station.”

He further said, “The meeting was held without permission. We are investigating it.”

Well-known public intellectual Hiren Gohain, Akhil Gogoi, who leads peasants rights organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, and Manjit Mahanta have been named in the first information report. Mahanta is the convenor of the Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill.

The three are part of a civil society group 'Nagarik Samaj', which is protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Meanwhile, Section 144 was imposed in Guwahati following agitations by several organizations against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

In order to protest against the passage of the citizenship bill in the Lok Sabha, students of two state-run universities and over 15 colleges across the state of Assam decided to boycott their classes indefinitely on January 9.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, seeks to provide citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains and Christians from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and is pending in the Rajya Sabha.
