After a complaint by BJP IT cell member Vinit Goenka, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel has been suspended for 'offensive behaviour' he displayed when Goenka reported that passengers were offering namaz directly on the gangway of Mumbai International Airport's Terminal 2.
On Saturday, Goenka questioned the CISF officers about a group of passengers offering namaz on the gangway as the airport already had a separate prayer room. In response, the CISF personnel told Goenka that even he was free to do so, and allegedly badmouthed his religion. Goenka then tried to stage a dharna on the spot, arguing that since there was a designated place at the airport for offering prayers, passengers should not be allowed to do so on the gangway.
“When my wife started video recording the incident, one of the CISF men tried to snatch her phone. He also made some unpleasant remarks and seemed very confident that we would leave for our flight and forget the matter. It was then that I decided to sit on dharna and demanded an apology from their commandant,” Goenka said to media.
The CISF commandant reached the location a few hours later and apologised, asking his two juniors to apologise as well.
“Had he been as sober and reasonable as his senior, the issue wouldn’t have escalated to this level. I will, however, write to the ministry of civil aviation as well as the home ministry about the same for necessary action to be taken,” said Goenka.
According to reports, passengers offering namaz at any open space is not an uncommon sight, even though the airport has designated prayer rooms.
