In a shocking failure of technology, the website of India's defence ministry was hacked on Friday evening by notorious elements and some Chinese characters were allegedly appearing on the website, indicating the involvement of Chinese hackers.

Upon visiting the website, the error message pops up stating, "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later." Following the mishap, the Ministry of Defence tweeted, "Issue with the MoD website has been taken note of. Appropriate action has been initiated."

While the website is unavailable currently, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has assured that it will be restored shortly and an investigation by National Informatics Centre, which maintains the government websites is underway to track the hackers.

"Action is initiated after the hacking of MoD website. The website shall be restored shortly. Needless to say, every possible step required to prevent any such eventuality in the future will be taken," tweeted Sitharaman.

Notably, the unfortunate incident took place on the same day when the Indian Air Force announced the commencement of its largest ever wargames, focusing on the dual threat of China and Pakistan. The Indian government websites have been under the radar of hackers for a while now.

In January, Pakistan-based operatives allegedly had hacked the website of National Security Guard (NSG) and defaced it with anti-India content and comments against the Prime Minister. In the past 4 years, 700 websites linked to the central and state governments were hacked.
