CBI Files Second Chargesheet In PNB Scam, Names Mehul Choksi And Nirav Modi

The Central Bureau Of Investigation filed its second chargesheet in the multi crores bank fraud involving diamond traders Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi on Wednesday in a special CBI court in Mumbai. The agency had named four senior bank officials in its first chargesheet. Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi have been named in both the chargesheets.

The focus of the second chargesheet as per reports are the Letters of Undertakings and foreign letters of credits of Mehul Choksi and his firm worth Rs 600 crores.

The 12000-page chargesheet as per ANI has named Mehul Choksi, the owner of Gitanjali Group and the uncle of Nirav Modi ‘wanted’ under sections 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code read with Sections 409 and 420 of IPC and relevant provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

This comes a day after PNB announced a massive loss of Rs 13,417 crore in its fourth-quarter earnings report.

Both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi fled India before the incident came to public notice. Choksi has refused to return to India and even wrote a letter to the Central Bureau of Investigation in March stating that he was afraid and concerned of his safety. In a lengthy letter, Choksi accused the media of exaggerating the charges and accusations against him. Stating that the media frenzy made him fear for his life, Choksi refused to return. He said his family and him were being threatened by people with whom he had business relations.
