District Magistrate of Buxar in Bihar Mukesh Pandey allegedly committed suicide at the Ghaziabad railway station on Thursday night after sending a WhatsApp message to a friend and leaving behind a suicide note. His severed body was recovered from a rail track near the yard and was identified by the suicide note found nearby.
Ghaziabad GRP SHO Somvir Singh said that it seemed that the IAS officer committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train. "Body has been sent for post mortem which would be conducted on Friday," he said.
A suicide note, purse and identity card of the deceased were also recovered, the GRP said.
According to reports, Pandey sent a WhatsApp message to a friend that he was planning to commit suicide by jumping off a building in Delhi. The friend informed the Delhi police and the police launched a search for Pandey but could not locate him.
"At 6:30 PM, we got to know through his friends that IAS officer Mukesh Pandey may commit suicide. We immediately reached at the district centre but found nothing", said a police officer.
They finally recovered his dead body from the railway station, along with the suicide note that read "I am Mukesh Kumar Pandey, IAS, 2012 batch, posted as DM Buxar. I am committing suicide of my own volition. After my death, inform my relatives."
The 32-year-old Pandey had reportedly flown to New Delhi on Thursday morning via Varanasi after giving his charge to the Buxar deputy development commissioner (DDC) Mobin Ali Ansari citing ailment of a close family member.
An IAS officer of the 2012 batch, Pandey had been recently posted to Buxar as DM.
