A Border Security Force (BSF) constable and 4 civilians were killed after Pakistan Rangers targeted Indian forward posts along the International Border (IB) in Jammu's RS Pura sector on Thursday night.

The constable hailing from Jharkhand identified as 27-year-old Sita Ram Upadhyay of the 192 battalion was hit by enemy fire around 1:30 AM and taken to GMC Jammu where he was declared brought dead around 3:20 AM. Upadhyay leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.

A total of 4 civilians were injured in the overnight firing as mortars were hurled from the Pakistan side at villages in the border area which prompted India to retaliate. The injured civilians, identified as Farooq Din of Jora Farm, Pyara Ram of Shamka village, and Raman Kumar Gupta and Harbans Lal of Trewa village in Arnia sub sector succumbed to their injuries on Friday.

“Firing in Heeranagar area was on during the intervening night of May 16 and 17 in which one BSF trooper was injured. Yesterday, during the daytime, it stopped but Pakistan resumed firing last night in Arnia sector which claimed the life of a jawan early today,” a senior official of the border guarding force said.

Unprovoked firing and attempts to infiltrate the International Border have increased in the last view days, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Earlier this week, another BSF constable was killed in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the IB.

Schools within a 5 km radius of the border have been closed as a preventive measure.
