The Police, on Saturday, detained a three-member BJP delegation including Meenakshi Lekhi near Kolkata Airport while trying to enter the violence-hit Basirhat in West Bengal.

The BJP team was stopped and detained 1 km from the Dum Dum airport after they had headed towards the violence-hit Basirhat.

Citing prohibition orders of Basirhat sub-division, the police detained the Delhi MP. Along with Meenakshi Lekhi were other members of Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP) including Baghpat MP Baghpat Satyapal Singh and Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan Om Mathur.

The team was set-up on Thursday by the party President Amit Shah in order to reach the violence-hit Basirhat and look into the incident.

Lekhi, lashing out at the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government said, “There was no Section 144 imposed in the area, no papers were shown to us on why we were being detained when we hadn't committed any offence.”

She also added, “Truth won't change whatever the Chief Minister (Mamata Banerjee) says. A BJP worker who has been stabbed (in the communal violence) is hospitalised.”

Protesting against the detention, BJP leader Om Mathur ended up snapping on the police. He said, “Do you know who we are? We are MPs and if you stop us a privilege motion will be filed in Parliament and you will land in trouble.”

Earlier, a communal clash had broken out in the Basirhat area of West Bengal over a controversial post on social media site Facebook.
