BJP Leader Ananth Kumar Dies At Age 59, PM Says, He Will Always Be Remembered

Ananth Kumar, Union Minister and senior Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader died at a hospital in Bengaluru on Monday. He was 59 years old.

Kumar was suffering from lung cancer and had returned last month from the US after treatment in New York.

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind in a tweet post expressed his grief over the demise of a veteran politician.

"Sad to hear of the passing of Union minister and veteran parliamentarian Shri H.N. Ananth Kumar. This is a tragic loss to public life in our country and particularly for the people of Karnataka. My condolences to his family, colleagues and countless associates," President of India tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief and tweeted, "Extremely saddened by the passing away of my valued colleague and friend, Shri Ananth Kumar Ji. He was a remarkable leader, who entered public life at a young age and went on to serve society with utmost diligence and compassion. He will always be remembered for his good work."

"Ananth Kumar Ji was an able administrator, who handled many ministerial portfolios and was a great asset to the BJP organization. He worked hard to strengthen the Party in Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. He was always accessible to his constituents," he added.

Born in a middle-class family on July 22, 1959, Kumar had started his political career as part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a student wing.

"He was a leader of very high standing within the BJP. It was under his leadership that the party got its first foothold established in southern parts of India," said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
