The Shiv Sena and BJP may have formed the government in Maharashtra as allies, however, cracks seem to be appearing in the alliance as a Shiv Sena MP recently termed the BJP as his party's "principal enemy" and hailed Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi as a voice people like to listen to.

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MP Raut claimed that they were part of the state government "just for the sake of it" and that BJP unfairly targeted the Shiv Sena.

"The BJP owns the government. We are (in the government) just for the sake of it. Instead of hitting out at the Congress and NCP, the BJP targets the Sena. They (the BJP) are thus our principal enemy," Raut said to media in Nashik.

"A leader is one who is accepted by people. There is a substantial change in Rahul Gandhi since 2014. People like to listen to him now," he said.

Raut said that the Uddhav Thackeray-led party has already begun preparations for the Lok Sabha and assembly polls of 2019 and is ready to fight the election with or without an alliance with the BJP.

Regarding the encroachments by hawkers on Mumbai streets, Raut said that the late Sena chief Bal Thackeray had been the first to raise the issue.

"Bala-saheb was the first person to speak on this issue. Today, unless the chief minister provides police protection to corporation employees, the civic body cannot remove encroachments," he said.
