Continuing on its winning spree, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday had a historic win in Tripura, winning a two-thirds majority with ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), bringing to an end 25 years of uninterrupted rule of the CPI(M)-led Left Front.

In honour of the Tripura win, the BJP will be celebrating 'Vijay Diwas' on Sunday across the nation. In the past, the BJP also celebrated 'Vijay Diwas' after the landslide win in Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections.

The BJP-IPFT alliance won a total of 43 out of the 59 Tripura constituencies that had gone to polls, with BJP winning 35 seats and its ally IPFT winning 8 seats. BJP leaders credited the win to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hard work and vision, who had personally addressed rallies in the poll-bound state.

The BJP is also likely to form the government in Nagaland, with its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, after which a total of 21 states out of India's 29 will be under the control of the BJP and only 4 under the Congress party. However, depending on the verdict of Meghalaya, which currently has a hung house, the state may go either way.

The loss in the northeast comes at a time that the Congress party had been securing multiple wins in bypolls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and had performed exceedingly well in Gujarat under the leadership of new Congress party President Rahul Gandhi.
