In an apparent show of strength against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2019 elections uniting the various Opposition parties across the nation, the RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav organised 'BJP Bhagao Desh Bachao' rally is taking place on Sunday at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

According to Lalu, the rally is expected to break all previous records of crowds at Gandhi Maidan.

"It will also break the record of the party's Garib Railla," said the RJD chief.

The Garib Railla which was organised by Lalu in 1996 holds the record of the maximum crowd at Gandhi maidan.

"More than one lakh people, mainly from rural areas, have already reached Patna. They have come with chura and sattu. They will stay at the residences of their respective MLAs and MLCs where arrangements have been made for their night stay," Lalu said.

Lashing out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his previous comment against the BJP in 2013 when he said that "mitti mein mil jayenge, par BJP se haath nahin milayenge" (even if I become one with the soil, I would not join hands with the BJP), Lalu called upon party workers and supporters to bring a symbolic 'fistful of soil' from their respective villages/towns to remind CM Kumar of his earlier statement.

"The soil brought by supporters will symbolically remind Nitish of his previous vow," Lalu said.

Although Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi will not be attending the rally, nor will BSP supremo Mayawati, 17 political parties will mark their attendance at the rally.

"Representatives of 17 political parties will attend the rally," Lalu's son and former deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, JD(U) rebel Sharad Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh CM and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and CP Joshi and NCP leader Tariq Anwar will be attending the rally.

Also in attendance will be leaders of regional parties including RLD's Jayant Choudhary, CPI's Sudhakar Reddy and former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren (JMM) and JVM-P's Babulal Marandi, AIUDF chief Baadruddin Azmal. Representatives of DMK, JDS and RSP will also be present at the rally, Tejashwi said.

Apart from targeting the BJP, the rally is also being seen as an opportunity to project Tejashwi as a 'leader of anti-BJP forces' in Bihar, and posters depicting Tejashwi as 'Baahubali' were also visible at hoardings in various locations of Patna.
