For children, having their fathers interned in a prison is trauma enough but for minors who went to visit their fathers in Bhopal jail on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, they faced additional trauma of having their faces stamped with an entry seal. Although the marks were temporary, the trauma will likely stay with the children.

The festival of Raksha Bandhan (also known as Rakhi) is celebrated with great aplomb across India, where sisters tie sacred threads onto the wrists of their brothers who in turn promise to protect and take care of their sisters.

This Rakhi which took place on Monday, like on other festivals, family members reached the Bhopal jail to meet their relatives lodged in the prison. The jail authorities stamped the faces of children entering the prison with an entry seal stamp.

As the incident became public, there was a wide condemnation of the jail authorities' act. Faced with the backlash, the jail superintendents told media persons that it would not recur but surprisingly maintained that there was no need for any action.

In a ray of hope, the Jail minister Kusum Mahdele has said that action would be taken. The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission and the State Children's Commission have also taken cognisance of the event.
