Bhendi Bazar Building Collapse In Mumbai: At Least 19 Killed, 12 Injured

At least 19 people have been killed and 12 injured when a five-story building in Mumbai's Bhendi Bazar area collapsed on Thursday morning. More than 30 others are believed to be trapped in the rubble and a search and rescue operation is underway.

South Mumbai BJP corporator Atul Shah said the crashed Arsiwala Building near JJ Junction in Pakmodia street of Bhendi Bazar housed around 10 families and a godown.

"It was over a century old and dilapidated like many of the buildings in the locality. But it is not clear whether it is included on the list of dangerous buildings," Shah told media from the crash site.

According to the Fire Brigade, the building had two wings which completely collapsed.

The injured rescued were rushed to the J.J. Hospital.

Ten fire engines, two JCBs, cranes and other machinery were deployed to the location to clear the massive heap of rubble and extricate the victims underneath.

The collapse of the Bhendi Bazar building marks the first major building collapse since the torrential rains the city faced on Tuesday. Previously, on August 26, the Chandivali Crystal Business Park building had also crashed on August 26, claiming six lives.
