Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met Assam flood victims in Lakhimpur region, the worst affected of the 29 districts in the state, and took stock of the relief and rehabilitation measures. The Congress leader assured the affected victims of assistance.
Rahul told the locals that he wanted to visit the place and assess the loss. He further said that the issue will be raised in Parliament by Congress.
“Maine socha ki aap sab ke beech aakar dekhun ki kya nuksaan hua aur madad karun. Hum flood ka mudda Parliament mein uthayenge (I thought of meeting you all and see how much loss has taken place and help. We’ll raise the flood issue in the Parliament),” he was quoted saying by news agencies.
Rahul said that it is the victims’ right to get compensation and if required Congress will fight on their behalf. “Apka hak banta hai, apko compensation milna chahiye, aapki ladai hum ladenge (it is your right to get the compensation, we’ll fight for you),” he said.
Rahul’s visit came one day after senior party leader Tarun Gogoi criticised the Central government by saying that even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a package of Rs 2,350 crore, BJP government in Assam did not present the real situation of the state to Narendra Modi.
