As spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh faces sentencing after being convicted in a rape case, the Supreme Court pulled up the Gujarat government on Monday regarding the slow trial against spiritual leader Asaram Bapu who has been jailed since 2013 on charges of rape but is yet to be convicted.

The apex court questioned the Gujarat government, asking "Why this delay in trial? Tell us why you haven't examined the victim yet," ordering it to submit a progress report on the Asaram Bapu case.

Since August 2013, the 74-year-old Asaram Bapu has been in a Rajasthan jail over allegations of raping a 16-year-old schoolgirl in his ashram in Gujarat's Surat earlier the same year. While Asaram and his son Narayan Sai were arrested two months after the incident, the trial has been pending in a Gandhinagar court since then.

Over the years, Asaram has made multiple requests for bail, citing his ill health while his lawyer argued that the rape survivor is yet to be questioned. A bail even reached the Supreme Court but was rejected.

Earlier this year as well, the apex court had asked the Gujarat court to speed up the recording of the evidence of the victims and other witnesses since more than 40 witnesses are believed to have not yet recorded their statements in the age-old case.

"Don't linger it. This is what we want to say (to) you (Gujarat). Expedite the recording of evidence," the Supreme Court judges said in April.

During the period that Asaram and his son have been in jail, 6 witnesses have been attacked and two have died.
