49 Arrested In UP's Kasganj After Clashes, Internet Services Suspended

In the wake of communal clashes in Kasganj city of Uttar Pradesh which lead to the death of a youth and injury of 2 others, internet services have been suspended till 10 PM on Sunday and a total of 49 persons have been arrested.

"In all, 49 accused persons have been arrested. Efforts are on to arrest the rest of the accused," the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said, hinting that the number of arrests was likely to increase.

Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said, "Two cases were registered yesterday. As many as nine arrests in two cases, 40 more preventive arrests have been made. ADG Agra Zone/Commissioner Aligarh/IG Aligarh range have been camping there since yesterday, an IG-level officer, D K Thakur, has reached there from Lucknow and camping since yesterday night."

A motorcycle rally on Friday on the occasion of Republic Day passed through Kasganj with chanting of 'Vande Mataram' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and reached minority-dominated community of Baddunagar where 'anti-social elements' pelted stones and opened fire. In the firing, one youth was killed, and two others injured.

Clashes erupted after the death of the youth with shops, buses and a car being torched.

"In all, three shops have been damaged, by pouring petrol below the shutter and setting it afire. Fire was also set on the seats of two private buses, but the engines of the buses are intact. One empty kiosk was also set ablaze by the anti-social elements. In the evening, the seats of an abandoned car were set ablaze," ADG said.
