Amarnath Yatra Terror Attack Death Toll Reaches 8 As An Injured Succumbs

The death toll in the July 10 terror attack on Amarnath Yatra pilgrims rose to 8 on Sunday as one of the injured pilgrims succumbed to injuries and passed away in a Srinagar hospital. 

Lalita Ben had been admitted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura in Srinagar after she sustained injuries in the attack on a unescorted bus bringing back pilgrims from visiting the Amarnath shrine.

The attack killed 7 pilgrims and left 18 others injured when militants attacked the bus while it was in the Batengo area of the Anantnag district on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. 

The driver of the bus Saleem has been hailed as a saviour since he continued driving the bus despite shooting on all sides and kept the bus doors locked so that the militants were not able to board the bus.

The militants, identified by the Jammu and Kashmir state police as belonging to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba attacked a police vehicle and a police check-post before they fired at the bus, which was traveling later than the prescribed hours. 

Despite the attack on the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims, the pilgrimage to the famous shrine continues unabated. From the very next day of the attack, pilgrims continued on to make their journey to the shrine. Security precautions have been increased further, to prevent any other mishap.
