Days after the highly-anticipated merger between the two factions of AIADMK, party MLAs belonging to deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran, on Thursday demanded that the assembly speaker P Dhanapal be appointed as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Dhinakaran supporter MLA P Vetrivel, addressing a press conference, said, “We've never said that we will vote against the incumbent government, but we want Speaker P Dhanapal to replace K Palaniswami as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.”

The faction's demand comes after 18 of their legislators submitted a letter to Governor C.Vidyasagar Rao withdrawing charging the government as corrupt and urging him to appoint a new Chief Minister.

Earlier, state Chief Minister K Palaniswami said that AIADMK needs to unite in order to take the party and the government forward. In a veiled attack on the Dinakaran led faction, he wondered how people who were with him till recently are now saying the government is corrupt.

He also said as long as the souls of party founder and later Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran and late Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa are with them, nobody can separate the party and the government from the people's hearts.

A day after the Dravidian party demanded a floor test in Tamil Nadu assembly, DMK ally Congress also raised their voice for AIADMK to prove their majority in the house. AIADMK has 134 MLAs of the total 234-member in state assembly.
