Gujarat politician Shankersinh Vaghela, who triggered a surge of defections by other MLAs when he quit the Congress party, on Tuesday said that he has not voted for their candidate Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha elections being conducted for 3 seats in Gujarat. Ahmed Patel is pitted against BJP national president Amit Shah.

After voting, Vaghela said, "Who will vote for a losing candidate."

Congress leader Ahmed Patel, also the political adviser to party president Sonia Gandhi is seeking a fifth Rajya Sabha term, but according to Vaghela his chances of winning are bleak.

"He doesn't stand a chance, won't even cross 40... Even legislators currently with Congress will not vote for him," said the 77-year-old veteran.

"When the Congress is not winning, what was the point in voting for Ahmed Patel? I haven't voted for Ahmed Patel," he declared.

"Four-five more MLAs from the 44 that the Congress is banking upon are also not going to vote for the party," claimed Vaghela.

In the Gujarat assembly, Congress has a total of 51 legislators including Vaghela who is still a legislator despite quitting the Congress. Ahead of the elections, Congress has ordered all of its legislators to vote for Ahmed Patel, warning that defiance will result in 'career-altering penalty'.
