8 Killed, 3 Injured As Bus Depot Roof Collapses In Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam

At least 8 people have been killed and 3 others injured after a bus depot rest room roof collapsed in the Nagapattinam area of Tamil Nadu on Friday morning.

According to reports, all the 8 victims were employees of the state transport cooperation the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). While 7 were drivers, the 8th person was a bus conductor.

The incident took place early morning on Friday, around 3:30 AM at Porayar in Nagapattinam. The building was at least 60 years old and belonged to TNSTC.

The police said that the victims were bus drivers and conductors who had been taking rest in the building after their duty.

The injured were taken to the Karaikal General Hospital and the Nagapattinam District Collector Dr C Suresh Kumar visited the spot to conduct enquiries. The state Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar is also expected to visit the site soon.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has announced a compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh for the kin of the deceased, Rs 1.5 lakh for those injured severely and Rs 50,000 for those with mild injuries.

The Chief Minister has also announced the provision of a government job for any one member of the family of the deceased in the Nagapattinam building collapse.
