Over the duration of one week, nearly 70 children lost their lives at the Gorakhpur BRD Medical College Hospital, the large number of fatalities most likely occurred due to a shortage of oxygen, however, tragedy is not yet over. From Saturday onwards, 6 more children have died at the BRD hospital, due to encephalitis.

The shocking number of deaths triggered immediate controversy over why so many children died in such a small time. While the UP state government maintained that deaths due to encephalitis are common, they were rebutted by the news that there was a shortage of oxygen which led to the increased death toll.

"In the past three days -- from August 12 to August 14 -- six encephalitis patients, mostly children have died. In the same period, as many as 21 patients were admitted for treatment. At present nearly 75 encephalitis patients are undergoing treatment in the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital," additional director health Pushkar Anand said.

The deaths of the children at the Gorakhpur hospital resulted in a significant political backlash as Opposition parties called for the resignation of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the 'massacre' of children.

Rejecting the demands for CM Yogi's resignation, BJP chief Amit Shah said, "It is natural for Congress to ask for Yogiji's resignation. This is not the first time such an incident has taken place in this large country of ours. Such incidents have taken place during Congress rule in many states," he told reporters.
