5 Killed, 8 Injured As 4-Storey Residential Building Collapses In Mumbai's Ghatkopar

At least 5 people have been killed when a 4-storey building in the Ghatkopar suburb of Mumbai collapsed on Tuesday morning, which was the residence of around 15-16 families.

According to reports, 9 people have been rescued from under the debris of the Sai Darshan residential building, however, another 30-40 are feared to be trapped.

"Five people have died, 8 seriously injured, have ordered an inquiry," said BMC Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar.

The building collapsed in the Damodar Park area of Ghatkopar, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) control room received a call at 10.43 am about the accident, fire brigade department chief PS Rahangdale said.

Around 8 fire engines along with rescue vans and an ambulance were rushed to the spot.

"Our rescue team, fire brigade jawans and other senior officials of the BMC have also reached the spot. The rescue work is going on a war-footing," said Rahangdale.

The 40-year-old building held a total of 16 flats and a nursing home was also being set up on the ground floor.

State Housing Minister Prakash Mehta, senior officials of the BMC and others have rushed to the site to supervise rescue and relief operations.
