A total of 3 militants belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group were killed on Wednesday in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir after an overnight search and cordon operation resulted in a shootout with security forces.

The slain militants have been identified as Javed Sheikh, Dawood and Aquib and are all locals. According to a senior police official, Sheikh was the Hizbul district commander.

Following specific inputs about the presence of militants, security forces surrounded the Radbug village in Magam area on Tuesday evening and launched a search and cordon operation.

"When the cordon around the house in which they were hiding was tightened, they fired at the security forces triggering an encounter," the officer said.

The holed up militants rushed out from their hiding on Wednesday morning, firing indiscriminately to break the cordon but were killed in the ensuing shootout.

Villagers in the area had attempted heavy stone pelting at the security forces to disrupt the anti-terror operation but were chased away.

Three weapons were recovered from the slain militants.
