2-Year-Old Boy Rescued 11 Hours After Falling 15 Feet In Open Borewell

A 2-year-old boy was miraculously rescued from a defunct open borewell near Vinukonda in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh 11 hours after he had fallen down.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and the administration combined to launch a massive operation to rescue the boy, identified as Chandrasekhar.

Chandrasekhar had been playing near a cattle shed in Ummadivaram village when he accidentally fell down into the defunct borewell on Tuesday afternoon, police said. His mother tending cattle nearby did not notice that the 2-year-old was playing precariously close to the old borewell which had been left uncovered.

When authorities reached the location, they discovered that the boy had been trapped over 15 feet down the borewell shaft. To rescue the toddler, a crater was dug parallel to the borewell while oxygen tubes were lowered to him.

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa spoke with the district authorities asking them to spare no effort to rescue the trapped child, officials said. District Collector Kona Sasidhar also rushed to the village to oversee the rescue operation of Chandrasekhar.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas also spoke to the district medical and health officer, and a medical team was rushed to the location.
