2019 Civil Investiture Ceremony: President Ram Nath Kovind Confers Padma Awards

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the prestigious Padma Awards on Monday at a special function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. 56 out of the 112 "inspiring" personalities were selected for this year's Padma awards.

The remaining awardees are likely to be conferred the honor at another function to be held later this month.

Folk Singer from Chhattisgarh Teejan Bai, President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh, noted author and Maratha history scholar Babasaheb Purandare and executive chairman of L&T Anil Kumar Manibhai Naik are recipients of Padma Vibhushan this year.

Fourteen persons were selected for Padma Bhushan which includes Scientist Nambi Narayan, Malayalam Actor Mohanlal, South African politician Pravin Gordhan, and late journalist Kuldip Nayar.

Ninety Four Padma Shri will be given this year. The recipients include Sportspersons Sunil Chettri, Gautam Gambhir, Harika Dronavalli, Sharat Kamal, Dancer Nartaki Natraj, Farmers Kamala Pujhari and Ram Saran Verma and Social Worker Muktaben Dagli who is working for the welfare of Divyangjans.

Noted theatre personality from Maharashtra Babasaheb Purandare alias Balwant Moreshwar Purandare (Padma Vibhushan), Bihar leader Hukumdev Narayan Yadav (Padma Bhushan), former CEO of multinational techno giant Cisco Systems John Chambers, renowned dancer and filmmaker Prabhu Deva (Padma Shri) were also honored.

The awards which were announced on the eve of Republic Day includes 21 women and 11 persons from the category of Foreigners, NRI, PIO, OCI and 1 transgender person.

The nomination process for Padma awards was made online in 2016 and a simple, accessible and secure online platform was put in place to encourage citizens at large to participate.

Erstwhile ''Government Awards'' transformed into ''Peoples Awards'', another official said. A record 50,000 nominations were received for the 2019 awards, which is 20 times those received in 2014 when there were just 2,200 nominations.
