An 18-year-old boy in Chennai paid a heavy price when he attempted to take a selfie on top of a train on his birthday, as he got electrocuted and suffered burns across 50 percent of his body.

In an attempt to impress his friends, the boy identified as M Dileepan, who was celebrating his birthday, climbed on top of a train coach at the Tambaran railway station to take a selfie despite being asked by several officers not to do so.

The boy received an electric shock and fell to the ground and was admitted to the Kilauk Medical College hospital where he is undergoing treatment at the burn unit.

According to reports, the boy Dileepan is the son of a railway employee in the engineering department and had been living with his family in the railway colony.

Luckily, Dileepan survived the dangerous selfie attempt, but others taking selfies in dangerous situations have not always been so lucky. Two teenagers were killed in Delhi when they were attempting to take selfies on a railway track. Although they had initially checked that the tracks were empty, a sudden train caught them by surprise and both the boys perished.

Based on an international study of the number of selfie deaths across the world, it was found that between March 2014 and September 2016, 60 percent of all the selfie deaths had occurred in India alone.
