Due to security concerns, girls are told not to accept car from strangers. But a 16-year-old girl in Greater Noida near Delhi paid a heavy price for accepting a ride from a known classmate, who instead of dropping her home, gangraped her in the car along with his friends, media reported on Tuesday.

The Class 11 student on April 18 missed her school bus and was walking home alone when a classmate and his friend stopped their car and offered to drop her home. The boys allegedly forced her to have a drink laced with drugs and gangraped her, keeping her gagged. The three attackers drove her around for a few hours before dropping her off on the roadside where she was found unconscious by the police.

"We received information from the girl's father that on April 18, she could not be found and based on his statement a First Information Report was filed against three people. We have caught the main accused and another youth, while a third one is still on the run," said Awneesh Kumar, a senior police officer.

So far, 2 people have been arrested in the case.

The gangrape comes in the wake of national outrage over the brutal gangrape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua. Subsequently the government passed an ordinance according to which those convicted of raping a girl below the age of 12 years would be sentenced to death. The ordinance raised questions on why rapists of girls above the age of 12 years should also not be sentenced to death.
