Averting a major calamity, 150 grams of suspicious white powder found inside the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday has been identified as being PETN, a powerful and dangerous explosive. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called for an NIA investigation into the matter.

"The packet of the explosive was found under the chair of the Opposition's leader. It was 150 gm of PETN. 500 gm of PETN is enough to blow the whole Assembly off. This shows the severity of the situation. I suggest that everybody present in the Assembly should be investigated by the police and that the NIA should investigate into the matter," said the CM.

According to reports, the explosive was kept under the chair of the Opposition leader.

The security personnel with the help of a dog squad were able to recover the powder before any explosions could take place.

After the incident, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called for a high-level meeting on Friday.

Pentaerythritol trinitrate (PETN) is considered to be one of the most powerful and one of the least stable explosives. As it's made with plastic and has no smell it is difficult to detect and can pass metal detectors easily. Even bomb-sniffing dogs find difficulty in identifying it.

Small quantities of the explosive are enough to wreck havoc and have been used by terrorists in the past. Even 100 grams of PETN is sufficient to blast away a car.
