Swine Flu Reaches Epidemic Proportions In Gujarat As 212 New Cases Identified

Commonly known as Swine flu, the H1N1 virus has reached epidemic proportions in Gujarat as 212 new cases, and 12 deaths were reported on Wednesday, resulting in a total of 2,095 cases that have been reported in the state since the beginning of this year.

According to State health department figures, from the 2,095 cases of Swine Flu reported this year there have been 220 deaths while 746 have been cured and 1,129 remain under treatment.

In the wake of the rapid spread of the H1N1 virus and the resulting deaths, the authorities have launched emergency measures such as setting up a dedicated helpline and launching a state-wide awareness campaign.

Health Minister Shanker Chaudhary, said, “More than 15,000 staff members of the health department and civic bodies are working round the clock not only to ensure treatment to patients but also contain the spread of viral flu.”

Meanwhile, Jayanti Ravi, Health Commissioner, advised that anyone with symptoms like cold, sore throat, fever and body ache should immediately go to private or government-run medical centre as all government hospitals are well-equipped to tackle the illness.

In response to a PIL asking for a court-appointed committee to inspect and report on “the sorry state of affairs and callous and negligent attitude on the part of the respondent authorities which has given rise to outbreak of vector and mosquito borne diseases,” the High Court slammed the authorities.

On behalf of the petitioner, lawyer K.R. Koshti has sought the court’s direction to provide compensation to the victims of swine flu, malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases in the State.
