There was a time when we satisfied ourselves by just the smell of a food we were not allowed to eat because of the unhealthy amount of fat it contained. But if a recent research is to go by, sense of smell that helps in enjoying the food may be inadvertently making you fat.

These discoveries reveal that an obese mouse who had lost any sense of smell and was on a fat diet lost weight far more quickly while another mouse with a strong sense of aroma gained twice as much weight due to smelling the fat food.

The results indicate the crucial role of the smell of our food and how it largely determines our weight.

'The study shows if we manipulate olfactory inputs we can actually alter how the brain perceives energy balance and how the brain regulates energy balance', said Celine Riera from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

'While searching for food, the body stores calories in case it's unsuccessful, but once the food is secured, the body feels free to burn it', Riera added.

The journal Cell Metabolism published this new research in the field of health and diet.

'Sensory systems play a role in metabolism. Weight gain isn't purely a measure of the calories taken in, it's also related to how those calories are perceived', explained Andrew Dillin from the University of California, Berkeley.

The researchers are not looking at a possibility to make a drug that doesn't interfere with the smell but still blocks that metabolic circuitry.
