Happy Labour Day! Know All About The Day Dedicated To Workers, Also Known As May Day

Businessmen may gain fame and money, however, the economy of any nation depends on the hard work of labourers and the working class. To honour the working class, May 1 is celebrated as International Labour Day, also known as May Day. In India, Labour Day is also known as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din.

The concept of Labour Day originated in the 1800s, when industrials used to exploit the labour class by making them work for up to 15 hours a day. A labour union movement in the US arose from the exploitation and demanded proper wages, paid leaves and breaks for the workforce, which highlighted the importance of the labourers in the functioning of industries. To honour the contributions of the labourers, Labour Day was established.

The date May 1 was selected as International Labour Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket massacre in Chicago where labourers protesting for an 8-hour workday had a bomb thrown on them, resulting in the death of several people.

In India, Labour Day or May Day was celebrated for the first time in 1923 when the Labour Kisan Party organised the May Day celebrations in Chennai (then Madras).
