While Valentine's Day witnesses multiple traditions and customs across the world, a particular tradition from Delhi University's Hindu College is making news.

For the last several years, students at Hindu College choose a Bollywood actress, place her image under a tree which they have named 'virgin tree'. The actress who is worshipped is referred to as 'Damdami Mai' and the common saying is that praying to Damdami Mai under the virgin tree would not just help them find love but also lose their virginity.

The Virgin Tree has been synonymous with sentiments, first love, and a special puja that happens on February 14 every year. The tree has seen endless romantic tales that bloomed underneath it, and numerous trust they lost their single status on account of 'Damdami Mai ki puja' on Valentine's Day. For the yearly puja, the tree is beautified with water-filled balloons, condoms, and posters of Damdami Mai.

Nobody can precisely tell when the convention of the Virgin Tree puja began, however, the Virgin Tree has existed with its matchmaking powers since the '70s.

Over the years, the puja continued the tradition of worshipping Damdami Mai', but this year a male deity joined her, who, this year, has been designed as the 'Love Guru'. Following the tradition, Posters of actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranveer Singh would be put up on the tree this year.

The practice has come under severe criticism from several individuals and organisations.

DCW chief Swati Jaihind reportedly said that she was unaware of the ritual until a few students explained it to her.

“Posting pictures of women in this manner should be stopped as it is demeaning”. She added, “Action will be taken against those indulging in these practices.”
