Diwali is just around the corner and festivities start with the arrival of Dhanteras. The day which will be observed on October 16th this year is the day considered the best for worshipping the goddess of wealth, Maa Lakshmi.

Dhanteras is a combination of two Sanskrit words, 'Dhan' stands for wealth whereas 'Teras' means Thirteen which refers to the 13th day of the Kartik month in Hindu calendar. The auspicious occasion is observed by Hindus all over the country.

As per religious beliefs, people should invest in metal on the day according to their budget. While buying jewellery and coins of gold or silver is suggested, utensils made of iron, copper or brass also works the same.

It is believed that by purchasing metal items, you invite Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber to shower your household with wealth. Lord Kuber is also worshipped on this day. The day is observed for the success, wealth and wellbeing of your loved ones.

All the family members must be present at the time of puja. Before the rituals start, women must light up their house from diyas in honour of Lord Yama, the God of death. The rituals start by giving a bath to Lord Ganesha's idol and offering him the red cloth.

The lord is then offered flowers, which devotees must chant the holy mantra "वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ । निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥" (Vakra-Tunndda Maha-Kaaya Suurya-Kotti Samaprabha | Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryessu Sarvadaa ||)
