Kolkata Flyover Collapse: At Least 18 Dead, Over 100 Injured

An under-construction bridge collapsed in north Kolkata on Thursday killing at least  18 persons and over hundred injured. According to reports, the incident took place near Ganesh Talkies at Girish Park. Disaster management and trauma care teams reached the spot to rescue those trapped. Army has also reached the accident site for the rescue operation. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) comprising about 80 personnel have rushed to site. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee reached the spot where under-construction bridge collapsed near Ganesh Talkies. CM announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the dead and Rs 2 lakh each for those critically injured as well as Rs 1 lakh for those who suffered minor injuries. The accident spot is about 13 kms from the NDRF base. "The teams are well equipped to immediately conduct rescue operations. They will do that exactly as soon as they reach," Singh said. A big portion of the flyover fell on the street below that is densely congested with large number of vehicles constantly passing by. Residents living nearby expressed shock as they clearly witnessed the submerging of the flyover to the ground. According to reports, an eyewitness has claimed that as many as 150 people could be trapped under the rubble. (With IANS inputs)
