For a long time, her death was considered a case of suicide since her death was preceded by a Twitter war with Pakistani journalist, Mehr Tarar, whom, Pushkar suspected to be having an affair with her husband.
When investigations led nowhere, the police looked at the case from a murder angle. It was suspected that Pushkar was poisoned, however, no poison could be detected in an autopsy.

Samples were even sent to the FBI labs for testing in February, 2015 but, by November, after an FBI report, the theory of radioactive poisoning was also discarded.
Her husband, Tharoor has been questioned several times by the police. Pushkar's domestic help and driver have also been questioned, but, the police haven't named any suspects thus far.
