PM Narendra Modi Begins His 5-Day ASEAN Tour With Indonesia, Signs 15 MoUs With President Joko Widodo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his 5-day visit to nations which are part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. He kicked off his trip post landing in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta on Tuesday.

His trip is aimed at enhancing political, economic and strategic relations between India and its maritime neighbours. PM Modi met Indonesian President Joko Widod for delegation-level talks at Istana Merdeka and discussed steps to upgrade their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Post discussing strategic and business engagements, the two leaders established Comprehensive Strategic Partnership before signing 15 Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) strengthening India and Indonesia's Defence, Space, Railways, Pharma, Policy Planning and Research ties among others.

PM Modi began his Indonesia visit by laying wreath at the  Kalibata National Heroes in Jakarta where over 7,000 people who are either military casualties and veterans from Indonesian War of Independence are buried at the cemetery. He then moved to meet the Indonesian President.

Upon landing in Jakarta, PM Modi received a warm welcome from the enthusiastic locals. He had tweeted, "India and Indonesia are friendly maritime neighbours with deep civilisational links. This visit will further the convergence of our political, economic and strategic interests."

Prime Minister will interact with business leaders in Indonesia and address the Indian gathering in Jakarta in the evening followed by a banquet hosted by Indonesian President. He will make a brief stopover at Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur on May 31 before leaving for Singapore.
