Two years back, Aamir Khan started a campaign called Paani Foundation with the aim of helping the drought-ridden areas of Maharashtra. He, along with his television show 'Satyamev Jayate' director Satyajit Bhatkal urge the college students to volunteer at the event annually.

Credited Satyahit for the initiative's idea, Aamir asserted that no moment can work without a great idea and celebrities only push it. The event promotes shramdaan (voluntary labour) and urges the youth, city dwellers and villagers to participate in promoting water conservation in the rural areas.

In 2016, over 1000 people joined the actor in Shramdaan and this year, more than 1,00,000 volunteers are expected to partake at the moment including 'Raazi' actress Alia Bhatt. The event has been organised across 75 talukas and 24 districts of the state.

Alia confirmed about joining Aamir at Marathwada for shramdaan with a shovel in her hands on Twitter. She wrote, "Tomorrow that is the 1st of May.. I will be at a village in Marathwada, doing shramadaan with a shovel in my hands. What’s your plan?"

An insider told the Mid-Day, "Alia was only happy to be part of it. She will take some time off from the shoot of Kalank to join him for the day. However, Alia will return to the city by 2.30 pm to be part of promotions for her upcoming spy-drama, Raazi."

Explaining the procedure of participation in Shramdaan, Aamir has said, "When you sign up, you choose the taluka closest to you. When you reach the village, there will be a registration desk where you will be given a spot. The entire area is mapped out with chalk."

Adding an example, he said, "If you are told to go to position 7A, there will be a rectangular drawing at that spot where you will dig. We kept 25 April until midnight as the deadline to register because we needed at least four to five days to plan everything."

Earlier in March, Aamir has requested his fans to conserve nature and participate in Shramdaan. On the work front, Aamir is currently busy filming 'Thugs Of Hindostan' co-starring Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachchan and Fatima Sana Shaikh whereas Alia Bhatt is shooting for 'Kalank'.
