Bengali-Hindi Actress Sumita Sanyal Passes Away At Age 71

Veteran actress Sumita Sanyal passed away at the age of 71 years on Sunday, leaving behind film editor husband Subodh Roy and a son. The cause of death is yet to be revealed for Sumita, who starred in both Bengali and Hindi cinema.

The well-known actress was born during British rule on October 9, 1945, in Darjeeling as Manjula Sanyal. She was named as Suchorita by Director Bibhuti Laha for his film Khokhababur Pratyabartan. Later her name was shortened by director Kanak Mukhopadhay to Sumita.

Sumita acted in more than 40 Bengali films including Sagina Mahato opposite Dilip Kumar and the lead role in Kuheli alongside Biswajit and Sandhya Roy. In Bollywood, her most famous movie was Anand in 1970 where she starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan. Other Bollywood performances include Guddi, Aashirwad and Mere Apne.

Apart from the big screen, Sumita also acted in a number of television serials, stage theatre, and group theatre.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee tweeted her condolences. She posted, "Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans".
