OP Jindal Global University held its seventh convocation ceremony cum founder’s day celebrations at the Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium on Tuesday. 551 students from the Law, Business, International Affairs, Liberal Arts & Humanities and Government & Public Policy Schools were conferred degrees at the glittering ceremony.

The event began with Dignitaries paying tributes to Shri OP Jindal on his 88th birth anniversary. The university was established in his memory.

Speaking at the Convocation, Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu who was the Chief Guest of the event said he was elated to see more and more girls winning the gold medals and awards.

“I was particularly feeling very happy, elated when I was asked to present Gold Medals and awards. I could find girl after girl, they all coming here. This is the need of the hour, women must get their due. If you provide them with a level playing field they will excel and they will outbeat the men.” He said.

In a fourty minute long speech, Naidu spoke about the need to provide level playing grounds to girls and advocated the need to pass the Women’s reservation bill.

Complimenting JGU founding Chancellor Naveen Jindal for his vision, Naidu said, “Share and care is the philosophy of India. With this philosophy, Mr Jindal established this university. Naveen Jindal has brought this university to this level and provided an opportunity to all of you.”

Speaking at the Convocation, Haryana Governor Professor Kaptan Singh Solanki lauded OPJGU and said, “Jindal Global University is not not just the pride of our state of Haryana but also shines bright amongst the private universities of the country.”

“By establishing JGU in 2006, Mr. Naveen Jindal has not just honoured the national flag but has also strengthened the position of the academic sector in India. Today on this celebrated occasion of the Convocation Day, Founder’s Day and the Birth Anniversary of Mr. O.P. Jindal, I congratulate all the degree holders and the medallists. I am honoured as the Governor of Haryana to say that Central government has decided to grant autonomy to top 20 universities in India and Jindal Global University is one of them.” He further added.

Speaking at the occasion O.P Jindal University Chancellor Naveen Jindal said, “Today is a special day since, it is a day of celebration, reflection and gratitude for all. It is my father’s, Shri Om Prakash Jindal's, 88th birth anniversary. JGU was founded in his memory.  He always said that education is the greatest gift that can be given to anyone. I wish he was here to see the incredible work that has been done all over the years.”

Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Gita Mittal implored the graduating students to prepare themselves for the future as she made her address.

“There are three dictates that I run myself by hard work, humility and honesty. Rest keeps on falling into place. Don’t look at this graduating experience as drastic, it is a part of learning. Back then, women barely got any chance. Women lawyers were scanty. I was one of the lucky ones. I was often told that I was breaking glass ceilings but I felt that I achieved something when I delivered something of value. As Indra Nooyi, CEO, PepsiCo says- “young people should make sure that they carry someone who is not so privileged, as they move ahead.”

Asking the graduating students to serve the society Justice Mittal asked them to look up to their Chancellor Mr Naveen Jindal.

“It is important for you to stay engaged with your troubles. Stay energised, stay engaged, not just for yourselves but for the interest of others. Within the paradigm of CSR, I feel happy to state how the wonderful chairman, Mr. Jindal has operated in his hard days. I urge you to bring positive social change through innovation. I would again urge you to take varied social roles, with a sense of progression. Real successes come when you broaden your horizons.”

Addressing a massive gathering of students and their parents, JGU VC C. Raj Kumar, looked back at the journey of the University and said, “We began the University in a modest manner on 30 September 2009 with only 100 students, 10 faculty members and one school with a relatively small campus in Sonipat. Little did we know that our journey would bring us here with over 4500 students and 330 faculty members and 8 different schools across different disciplines and 800 acres campus with about 200 million square feet of built-up space.”

“This year is a watershed year for JGU for three reasons: first, the International rankings organisation, QS rankings recognised OP Jindal University and ranked as one of the top 300 universities in BRICS region. There are 9,000 universities in BRICS region and JGU being the youngest university was ranked among the top three hundred universities. Around the world, there are 27,000 universities and one-third of those universities are in the BRICS region. We are also the first private university in Haryana to be ranked internationally.” He further added.

Speaking on JGU’s mission to provide quality education at par with the best in the world, he said, “JGU has expanded significantly in the last nine years and this is because of the commitment to promote equality, quality, equity and excellence. We maintain a 1: 13 faculty-student ratio, which is not only the best in India but also in Asia. Our commitment to quality does not get compromised in our zeal and enthusiasm to expand the university.”

The Vice-Chancellor also read out a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The event saw the presence of other dignitaries like former Jammu and Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah, former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan, Deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sisodia, Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar. Most of them had come as proud family members of graduating students.
