Proving wrong the pre-programmed thinking that the quality of government schools is not up to the mark of private schools, a Chhattisgarh IAS officer and now a Parliamentary secretary-cum-legislator have had their respective daughter and son admit to local government schools.

While the IAS officer enrolled his 5-year-old daughter in the government school in Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh, the legislator has had his son admitted in a government school in the tribal Jashpur district.

Shivshankar Paikra, a Pathalgaon legislator had his 5-year-old son Kartikeya Kaurav Paikra enrolled in Class I at the  Shaskiya Prathamik Shala at Bangaon 'B' in the Pathalgaon block of Jashpur district.

According to Pakira, since there is no English medium private school in the region, he could have sent his son someplace else for studies but he didn't want to burden the little one at such a tender age. Also since Pakira's son was already comfortable with Hindi language it would be easier for him to adapt to school. The legislator added that his two daughters also initially studied in government schools and were later transferred to private English medium schools.

Pakira admitted that the condition of government schools in the state are not so good, but he was doing his best to improve the standards of the schools.

Balrampur collector Awanish Sharan who recently had his daughter admitted to a government school in Chhattisgarh denied that his act was 'newsworthy' but nonetheless has set off a trend of fresh acceptance of government schools. Sharan has been lauded for his efforts in uplifting the standards of the education system in Balrampur for the past 2 years since he was posted in the region.
