The Aadhaar identification cards have taken India by storm as several facilities are linked with them, however, for certain people, the Aadhaar cards represent a possible identity theft which would cause major problems if the data were leaked. For those avoiding creating their Aadhaar cards or linking them with other accounts, the noose is slowly tightening.

Since the Income Tax Department's online filing portal does not accept returns without any Aadhaar card or Aadhaar application number, those without the ID card have taken to file their results manually, offline.

A Bengaluru-based consultant was quoted as saying, "Aadhaar started off as something optional and we kept reading about data getting stolen. So a lot of us were concerned about giving our biometrics to the private operators given the potential for identity theft."

However, for those earning an income of Rs 5 lakh or above, the I-T returns can be paid online only.

Exemption from submitting Aadhaar details is provided for non-residents, foreign citizens, senior citizens above the age of 80 years and for those residing in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya.

According to an advocate, since the matter of linking Aadhaar card with the PAN card is pending in the Supreme Court, the PAN card would not be cancelled for lack of Aadhaar card. He added that no I-T return can be rejected for not quoting Aadhaar but if the returns are filed offline it's unlikely that they would get a refund even if it's due, which is why it's better to process the returns online.

As the prominence of the Aadhaar card grows, it's unlikely that detractors will be able to continue to abstain from obtaining the national id card.

I think people are avoiding to file online because of compulsion of linking Aadhar but i linked my Aadhar with PAN with Tax2win and it was done within minutes very easily.
