Ending the anticipation of an extended deadline for filing Income Tax Return (ITR), a top IT official has said that the last date will not be extended for filing ITRs in the financial year 2016-17.

The official said, "The last date for filing of ITRs remains July 31. There are no plans to extend this deadline. The department has already received over 2 crore returns filed electronically. The department requests taxpayers to file their return in time."

The official also falsified the reports of glitches on the income tax e-filing website saying that no major glitches have been reported on the website - - except for the time it was “interrupted for maintenance”.

The income tax department has also issued informative ads in national newspapers advising the tax payers to correctly disclose their income and file their ITRs on or before July 31.
