With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, Mumbai streets are buzzing with reverents hopping from one to the other Ganpati Idol artist, searching for the perfect idol to welcome in their homes during the festival.

Devotees are excited for the nearing festival whereas the Idol artists are worried about the effects of GST on their sales. Implementation of Goods and Services Tax has led to the heightened prices of Idols.

Makers might be willing to trim their profit margins but a little rise in Idol prices can't be neglected. Due to risen tax rates on Plaster of Paris and colour from 13.5% to 18% and 28% respectively, the prices for Ganpati Idols have gone up.

Ramesh Ganpat Raule, President of the Maharashtra Murti Sangathan said, "We can’t raise the cost more than 5 per cent for the devotees. We have to make sure the devotees don’t feel the pinch. But with GST, the cost of making a Ganpati has gone up, and we have to bear that."

Though GST has been yet to affect Ganpati Idol sales, Ramesh has requested the government to exempt the idol makers from the tax regime.

Idols of different kind of sizes and types including POP, clay and eco-friendly idols are available in the markets and the booking for idols begins months in advance. Idol makers collaborate with cloth and jewellery makers for bigger idols.
