Economist Rajiv Kumar Appointed New NITI Aayog Vice Chairman

Currently, a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research or CPR, economist Dr. Rajiv Kumar has been announced as the new Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, days after the incumbent Arvind Panagariya announced that he would be making a return to academics and resign from his post.

Dr. Kumar holds a DPhil in economics from Oxford and a Ph.D. from Lucknow University was earlier the Secretary General of FICCI and had also served as Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Apart from Dr. Kumar, Dr. Vinod Paul, a pediatrician at the AIIMS who has done substantial work in public health, has also been appointed as a member of the NITI Aayog, an official spokesman said.

The incumbent Panagariya, an Indian-American having joined the NITI Aayog in January 2015 had announced his resignation from the Vice Chairman post on August 1 as he would be returning to lecture at Columbia University. Panagariya's last day with the government think tank is to be August 31.

The new NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr. Kumar has served as a member of the National Security Advisory Board between 2006 and 2008 ad as the chief economist of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). He has also held senior positions in the Asian Development Bank, the Indian Ministry of Industries, and the Ministry of Finance.
