The launch of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1 has been a mixed bag, with some items getting cheaper and others more expensive. In good news for automobile fans, Tata Motors announced on Wednesday that it has slashed the prices of its passenger vehicles by up to 12 percent, passing on the benefits of GST.

"We are offering a price reduction of up to 12 percent ranging between Rs 3,300 and Rs 2,17,000 depending on the model and variant," the car maker's President (Passenger Vehicles Business Unit) Mayank Pareek said.

He said that the company has decided to pass on the entire benefits of the rolling out of GST directly to its customers, to encourage positive buying sentiments.

According to their statistics, the Tata Motors passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market were impacted in June as mixed reactions towards GST resulted in lower buying sentiments.

The Tata Motors passenger vehicle sales clocked in at 11,176 units, a decrease of 10 percent from the 12,482 units sold in the same month of the previous year.

However, the car manufacturer said that the drop in sales is being seen as temporary and is expected to recover in the quarter to come as there was a 11 percent growth in sales between April-June 2017 as compared to April-June 2016.

As per Pareek, the introduction of GST was welcome and is expected to enhance the ease of doing business and usher in a new era for the economy in general and especially, for the automotive industry.
